External gear pumps operate on a simple yet effective principle of positive displacement. The basic working principle involves the interaction between two external gears – a driving gear (or rotor) and a driven gear. These gears rotate in a tightly meshed fashion, creating a sealed chamber between the gear teeth and the pump housing.

The rotation of the gears causes the liquid to be drawn into the pump at the suction side as the gear teeth separate, creating a vacuum. Subsequently, as the gears continue to rotate, the liquid is trapped between the gear teeth and the pump housing, thus moving it toward the discharge side. The meshing of the gears ensures a continuous, uniform flow of liquid.
